What happened

South Africa finished a remarkable comeback on Saturday. Set 288 to win on the final day of the third Test at Newlands in Cape Town, Australia were bowled out for 111, handing the hosts a 176-run victory, a 2-1 series win and the top spot in the ICC men's Test team rankings.

The chase was effectively over within the first session. Kagiso Rabada struck twice in the opening over, removing Matt Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne, and later had Travis Head caught at gully for his 350th Test wicket. Australia were 60 for 7 at lunch, according to ESPNcricinfo's commentary. Off-spinner Simon Harmer then worked through the lower order, finishing with 6 for 16 from 21.1 overs, 14 of them maidens. Nathan Lyon, batting at number ten, top-scored with 33 not out, The Guardian noted.

Harmer, 37, ended with 10 for 120 in the match, the first ten-wicket haul of his Test career, AP reported. He was named Player of the Match, while all-rounder Marco Jansen was Player of the Series with 198 runs and 13 wickets.

Why people are searching

The search spike came largely from Telugu-speaking users, as regional outlets such as Eenadu and NTV Telugu led with the result. Indian fans have a direct stake: the result reshuffles the World Test Championship table, and South Africa's rise to number one changes the ranking picture India is chasing.

There was also the scale of the turnaround. Australia won the first Test in Durban by 214 runs. South Africa responded with an innings win in Gqeberha, where Australia were dismissed for 99, and then won the decider after conceding a first-innings lead of 100 runs at Newlands.

How the deciding Test unfolded

Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl, a decision taken only 11 times before in Tests at Newlands, Al Jazeera reported. South Africa made 329, and Australia replied with 429. In their second innings, the hosts recovered from a difficult position to post 387, leaving Australia to bat last on a wearing pitch that increasingly suited spin.

Sky Sports said the victory took South Africa to the top of the Test rankings for the first time since January 2016. Cummins acknowledged the pressure on his side, telling reporters, "We lost two games in a row. I think it's fair to be asking" questions, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

What comes next

Australia return home to host New Zealand, with their top-order batting under scrutiny. For South Africa, the World Test Championship holders, the series confirms a strong home record and a bowling attack that can win on different surfaces. Indian fans will be watching the updated standings as the race for the next World Test Championship final takes shape.
