What happened

JSW Motors' first car is taking shape in public. On 31 October, Rushlane published spy shots of the JSW Combat, a large, boxy plug-in hybrid SUV, testing in full camouflage, with its cabin visible for the first time. The SUV is due to debut on 4 December and will mark the JSW Group's entry into the Indian passenger car market under its own brand.

The Combat is reported to be based on the Jetour T2, an SUV from China's Chery Automobile. JSW Motors has a licensing and component supply partnership with Chery that allows it to sell Chery-based models under the JSW badge, Autocar India reported. The new brand is separate from JSW MG Motor India, the group's existing joint venture with SAIC Motor.

Why people are searching

Interest has been building since the 4 December date was reported in early October, after the launch slipped from its original festive-season target. The new images give buyers their clearest look yet. They show squarish headlights, a flat bonnet, a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, roof rails and chunky bumpers. Inside, the layout appears to mirror the international T2, with the steering-wheel logo covered.

Rushlane expects features such as a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, ventilated and powered seats, a 12-speaker sound system and Level 2 driver-assistance systems, though JSW Motors has not confirmed the list.

The powertrain and range claims

Most technical details so far come from the international model. According to Autocar India and HT Auto, the India-spec Combat is expected to pair a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine with an 18.4 kWh battery and two electric motors driving the front wheels. Combined output is put at 360 hp and 610 Nm, with a claimed electric-only range of 90 km on the NEDC cycle and up to 1,100 km in total. Autocar India said the India model appears to be the pre-facelift version of the T2.

Mint reported an expected price of Rs 30 lakh to Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom), which would place the Combat against premium SUVs rather than mass-market models. These figures are estimates, not official prices.

What comes next

The 4 December event should settle the open questions: the final name, specifications, price and how the SUV will be built and sold. Autopunditz, citing Financial Express, reported that JSW Motors plans to manufacture at its Bidkin facility in Maharashtra, while Mint said the company has started setting up dealerships. Two more Chery-based SUVs, derived from the Jaecoo J5 and the iCaur V23, are expected in 2027.
