What happened

Few players turn frustration into victory as dramatically as Daniil Medvedev, and the Vienna Open has given fans two days of it.

On Thursday, in the round of 16, the Russian lost the first set 6-4 to Britain's Cameron Norrie, who broke early for a 3-1 lead and controlled the rest of the set, Sportstar reported. He recovered to take the second set 6-3, but fell behind early in the decider. According to Rediff, after going 0-2 down he repeatedly bent down and struck the court with his hand. Sportstar described him "punching and slapping the court".

The deciding set swung back and forth, with both players breaking twice. At 4-5, with Norrie serving for the match, Medvedev faced a match point and saved it. He then dominated the tiebreak 7-1 to win 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(1). Both outlets noted that it was his 100th tour-level quarter-final.

Friday was a different story. Against French qualifier Adrian Mannarino, who had knocked out eighth seed Jakub Mensik, Medvedev won 6-2, 6-3. Match statistics published by Tennis.com show he held all eight of his service games without facing a single break point, while breaking Mannarino four times.

The result puts the third seed into the semi-finals of the ATP 500 event and extends a winning run that began with his title defence at the Almaty Open the previous week.

Why people are searching

Tennis has a large and growing audience in India, and Vienna this week combines several things that drive searches:

  • The viral moment. Clips of a former world No. 1 hitting the court, then escaping a match point, are made for social media.
  • Star power. Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Medvedev are all in the same draw, and their matches fall in the Indian evening.
  • The season finale. With the ATP Finals approaching in November, every win in late October carries extra weight, a point both Sportstar and Rediff highlighted.

Google Trends does not explain why a topic rises, so these reasons reflect the coverage rather than a confirmed cause.

What comes next

Medvedev will play the winner of the quarter-final between Tommy Paul and Carlos Alcaraz, which was still being played when this article was published. In the top half, Zverev faces Arthur Fery and Matteo Berrettini meets Alex de Minaur. The final is scheduled for Sunday, 1 November. We will update this page as results are confirmed.
