What happened

India arrive in Hamilton as series winners, but with a bruise. After winning the first three T20 Internationals of the tour, Shreyas Iyer's side was beaten by 87 runs in the fourth match at Eden Park, Auckland, on Thursday, 30 October.

New Zealand batted first and scored 259 for 7, the highest T20I total ever made against India, according to The Hindu. The innings was built around Glenn Phillips, who hit 107 off 49 balls, and Michael Bracewell, who smashed 65 off 25. The pair added 115 runs in just 41 balls, ESPN reported. Fast bowler Mayank Yadav was India's most successful bowler with 3 for 48.

India's chase never got going. They finished on 172 for 9, with vice-captain Tilak Varma top-scoring with 35 off 35 balls and Naman Dhir adding 28. Jacob Duffy took 4 for 23, while captain Mitchell Santner and Fisher took two wickets each.

Why people are searching

Most searches are practical: when the fifth T20I starts, where it is being played, and whether India will make changes. The match is at Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Sunday, 1 November 2026, starting at 12:30 PM IST (8:00 PM in New Zealand).

The size of the Auckland defeat has also drawn attention to India's workload on a long tour. Tilak Varma spoke in a video interview published by ESPNcricinfo about the side having been "playing non-stop across time zones". Before the fourth match he had told the BCCI that the team's goal was to win every game and aim for 5-0, a target that has now gone. Google Trends does not explain why a search rises, so these reasons reflect the coverage rather than a confirmed cause.

What to watch in Hamilton

Phillips and Bracewell showed in Auckland how quickly a total can run away in New Zealand, so India's bowlers will want a better plan for the middle and death overs. With the series already secure, the match is also a chance for India to look at players who have had fewer games on the tour, although no confirmed team changes had been announced when this article was published.

What comes next

A win would give India a 4-1 series result; a New Zealand win would make it 3-2. Either way, the tour moves straight on to the ODI series, which starts on 4 November at Eden Park (7:30 AM IST), followed by Tests in Wellington from 19 November and Christchurch from 27 November.
